The Path Home: A Season Rooted in Maine
WELL WORN PATHS - CHAPTER 15
THE ROAD WE KNOW
The Path Home
There is a moment each autumn when Maine seems to change almost overnight. The mornings turn cooler. The hillsides move from green to amber and gold. Fallen leaves gather along old stone walls, and roads we’ve traveled hundreds of times somehow look different again. It doesn’t last long.

Maybe that’s part of what makes Fall here so special. It gives us a reason to slow down and notice the familiar places around us.
For those of us who call Maine home, those places become part of our lives. The roads we drive every day. The towns we pass through. The orchard we return to each October. The places we stop for coffee, meet friends or simply find ourselves coming back to year after year. They’re ordinary places. But over time, they become ours.
Made Here. Worn By You
Over the years, we’ve spent a lot of time telling the story of how a Rancourt shoe is made. The leather. The handsewing. The people in our Lewiston workshop who cut, stitch, shape and finish every pair. Those things matter to us. They always will.
But a shoe’s story doesn’t end when it leaves our workshop. In many ways, that’s where it begins.
This Fall, we’ve introduced new leathers and new styles alongside some of the patterns we’ve been making for years. Roughman Chocolate brings a deep brown color and natural texture. Burnt Chiptan Bison has the grain and variation that make American Bison distinctive. Arizona Black gives the Harrison Boot a quieter, more understated look.
Different leathers. Different shoes. All made here in Lewiston and meant to be worn.

Because that’s when a good pair of shoes really starts to become yours. The leather softens. Creases form. Color changes. The fit becomes familiar. The marks gathered along the way become part of the shoe. A shoe earns its character through wear, not on the shelf.
That matters when we choose our leathers and when we build our shoes. We want them to look good when they leave Lewiston, and even better after a season, a year or many years of wear.

The Everyday Path
Most days are pretty ordinary. Work. Errands. Dinner with friends. A weekend away or a Saturday with nowhere in particular to be. That is where our shoes are meant to live. And this Fall, we’re spending more time telling that side of the Rancourt story.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be getting outside the factory and spending time around Maine with people, makers and small businesses we’ve come to know. Their work may be different from ours, but there’s a shared appreciation for making things well and doing it here in Maine.
Some of those stories will take us outside. Others will take us around town or simply over a cup of coffee. We look forward to bringing you along.
The Things We Carry With Us
For three generations, our family has been connected to the craft of shoemaking in Maine. Today, that work continues in Lewiston through the people who cut, stitch, handsew, shape and finish our shoes.
That history matters to us, but so does what comes next.

Every pair eventually leaves our hands and becomes someone else’s. With time and wear, it changes. That’s something we’ve always appreciated about a good pair of shoes. They aren’t meant to remain exactly as they were on the day they were made. They’re meant to be worn.

Fall will pass quickly, as it always does. The leaves will come down and before long we’ll be looking toward winter. But some things are made to stay with us.
Every well-worn path leads home.
