Beautifully made, but uncomfortable for a higher-volume mid-foot
I bought the Gilman Camp Moc in Rye Crazy Horse. As with the other Rancourt shoes I own, the construction and finishing are excellent. The Rye Crazy Horse leather is particularly nice if you like a more rugged, rustic look. It has more texture and tonal variation than brown Chromexcel and feels a little less polished or refined, in a good way. It suits this style of shoe very well.
My main issue is the fit through the top of the midfoot. The length is correct and I have no problems with the heel or forefoot, but I have a medium-volume midfoot and these are extremely tight to get into. I need a shoehorn and have to work my foot into them even though the actual size is right.
More importantly, the construction of the lacing creates two noticeable pressure points where the lace passes underneath the leather at the tongue. On my foot, those sit directly against the top of the midfoot and become quite uncomfortable after wearing the shoes for any length of time, particularly when walking.
I initially assumed this would improve substantially with break-in. The Rye Crazy Horse is an oily, fairly supple leather, so I expected it to give with wear. After several weeks of trying to break them in, they are only slightly better, but the pressure points are still uncomfortable enough that I can’t wear them for extended periods.
I own quite a few pairs of Rancourts in different styles, including Ranger Mocs, boat shoes, loafers, derbies and other models, and this is the only Rancourt…
